Cannes Heat

Glitz, Glamour, and Even a Touch of Grit on the French Riviera

PHOTOS

The Cannes Film Festival came to a close Sunday with the least staged photo op of the fortnight. When The Class, a docudrama on a year in the life of a schoolteacher in a gritty Parisian neighborhood, scored the prestigious Palme d'Or, its ecstatic teenage cast spontaneously swarmed the red carpet. Meanwhile, jury president Sean Penn may have griped about this year's lack of comedies, but there were yuks to be had at the annual amfAR gala a few nights earlier. By all accounts, auctioneer Sharon Stone was quite the edgy humorist. Entreating Sean Combs to pony up for a Julian Schnabel painting, Stone reportedly crawled onto the mogul's lap, purring, "Come on. You spend more on crack." The tactics seemed to work: The night raised $10 million for AIDS research. Finally, Dolce & Gabbana's bash at Le Bâoli brought out Lindsay Lohan, Natalie Portman, and Naomi Campbell, who happened to be celebrating her 38th birthday. Bonne anniversaire, Naomi. May this year be free of turbulence.
