Night Owls
A heavy-hitting crime drama brings out the stars
After receiving a rare standing ovation at Cannes, We Own the Night is finally opening in theaters this weekend. The advance buzz meant Tuesday night's Cinema Society screening, sponsored by Calvin Klein, was packed with Hollywood types like Adam Goldberg, Rufus Sewell, and Griffin Dunne, in addition to the usual fashion-socialite mix. The crime drama pits Mark Wahlberg against Joaquin Phoenix as brothers on either side of the law, but writer/director James Gray swears all animosity was on-screen only. "The movie is very intense," he allowed, "but the mood on set was completely ridiculous." Speaking of intense, leading lady Eva Mendes advised her grandparents to come 15 minutes late, after the movie's steamy opening scene. "They don't want to see me like that!" she said.
