Week 3's Q&A

Q: I have very curly hair and don't know what to do with it. It is always out off control and I end up tying it back. What can I do to get off the ponytail patrol and add some sophistication to my hairstyle?

A: You can create shape in your style by adding some long layers throughout and remove some of the bulk and weight in the interior by slicing channels into your haircut. This is something you can request from your stylist. I really love the VO5 Curvaceous Curls mousse in combination with the frizz crème to help tame your curls (try VO5 Smoothing Soufflé frizz defense cream).

Q: I'm starting to experiment with my style and was wondering what the fastest way was to scrunch my hair?

A: Towel dry most of the moisture from the hair while using scrunching motions. Use a good curl-control product for hold (try VO5 Curvaceous Curls styling mousse), then proceed to scrunch the hair with the hands until it is air-dried.

Q: I am an African American woman with a relaxer and like to party like a rock star every now and then. How can I get my coarse hair to keep its rock star shape and style?? Thanks.

A: To keep your rock-star shape, I would use a combination of a gel and hairspray for maximum control and shine (try VO5 Power Control gel). For a more malleable look try a reworkable putty such as VO5 Play it Again for soft moveable texture.

Q: At shoulder length, my slightly wavy hair with a lot of frizz sometimes makes me feel like the Queen of the Jungle. How I can smooth my hair and create a more tamed look?

A: Use a frizz taming cream to start (such as VO5 Smoothing Soufflé) and avoid blow-drying. Let your waves dry naturally to enhance your natural texture.

Q: Right now my thick mane is about eight inches past my shoulders with a natural wave. What can I do to spice up my style without cutting too much off? Any ideas for a fun, wild style?

A: I would cut some layering into the haircut to take out weight and add some style to your hair. Try playing with products to bring out your wave more. Sometimes it can jazz up your style by adding accessories or creating a funky up 'do. (Try VO5 Play it Again reworkable putty)

Q: Thin and straight, my hair will not hold a style for anything. What can I do to get rid the limp out of my 'do and bring it some body?

A: Try a volumizing mousse such as VO5 Whipped Volume. I would recommend blow drying using a round brush to add shape and volume.

Q: What is a great way to get soft, shiny curls? My hair is naturally very thick, so getting curls that flow freely is difficult. What can I do to avoid BIG hair? Thanks!

A: Have your stylist remove weight so your curls will move more freely. A good shaping and shine enhancing product is essential in order to tame curls and make them more brilliant and soft (Try VO5 Play it Again reworkable putty).

Q: : I love that faux hawks are in now and want to give it a try on my hair. I have bangs and can't really get them to stay up when I back-comb it. Please give me some tips on how I can get a real faux hawk grooving.

A: Making sure there is enough texture within your haircut is key. This will remove weight from the hair that can make it heavy and lay flat. Also use a good styling product to give it lift and separation - try a light wax or pomade (try VO5 Obey & Play gel wax).
