The less Azzedine Alaïa deigns to be involved in the fashion system, the more his influence seems to grow. The Spring and now Fall runways have been bursting with nods, subtle or not, to the high hemlines, corseted waists, and body-hugging silhouettes that Alaïa perfected in the eighties. Fitting, then, that the Tunisian-born, Paris-based designer has been chosen to "dress" this year's NYC edition of Le Bookthe fashion media directoryin a joint effort with his longtime collaborator, French artist Jean-Paul Goude. The edition includes the designer's sketches, Goude's iconic collages, and charming photographs, all featuring the diminutive mega-talent in quirky scenarios (peeking out of a stack of boxes, and from beneath a billowing skirt). In a word: inimitable.
Le Book New York 2007 with cover illustration by Azzedine Alaïa, $199, available at www.lebook.com.
