This month's Milan Furniture Fair has us thinking about home improvements. The coolest chandelier we've seen in some time, though, comes not from a European design firm but rather rural Africa. Specifically, a cooperative group working under the guidance of the Mud Ceramic Studio's Werner and Phillipa du Toit, who seek to uplift local communities by providing their artisans with employment and an artistic outlet. Each one of these intricate and—dare we say?—earthy masterpieces is made from 6,000 kiln-fired river-clay beads hand-strung on a one-of-a-kind wire frame. Hang one in your dining room or foyer and you'll be improving more than just your interior.
Mud Chandelier made from river clay, crystals, and wire, $2,500 to $4,800. For more information, see www.amaridianusa.com.
