While there's no doubt that jewels created plenty of glitter at the Van Cleef & Arpels celebration that kicked off fashion week, what really put the sparkle in partygoers' eyes was the St-Germain elderflower liqueur being served at the event. The artisanal spirit, packaged in a gorgeous glass Belle Époque bottle, is the only liqueur in the world made from fresh elderflowers, which are picked by hand just a few days a year in the French Alps, and transported by bicycle to the old-fashioned alembic stills of the St-Germain distillery. The painstaking production technique imparts a unique and complex flavor not unlike a pear-and-lemon eau-de-vie, which mixes beautifully with soda, Champagne, or white wine—and induces a buzz similar to absinthe's, according to some of the Van Cleef revelers. Cheers to the end of fashion week.
St-Germain elderflower liqueur, $29.95 for 750 ml, available at Sherry-Lehmann, NYC, www.sherry-lehmann.com; more information and recipes at www.stgermain.fr.
