screen gems

If you’ve ever walked out of a film wishing you could buy the clothes you just saw on screen, mark August 3rd in your diary. That’s when the wardrobe from El Cantante, the Marc Anthony-Jennifer Lopez production that tells the life story of pioneering 1970’s salsa singer Héctor Lavoe, goes on sale at Screaming Mimi’s. The stock includes slinky days-of-disco numbers, hot pants, and a dolman-sleeve mink jacket worn by Lavoe’s wife, Puchi, played by Lopez. “They were going for authenticity, so there aren’t necessarily big designer items,” says owner Laura Wills, who’s donating a portion of the proceeds to amfAR. “But there are some amazing period pieces.” Wills scooped up all the film’s costumes, including the clothes worn by extras, so there’s a lot to choose from. But if you want to zero in on Lopez’s personal wardrobe, we can report that the clothes are what Wills calls “a seventies size 6, which is really more like today’s 4.” Screaming Mimi’s, 382 Lafayette Street, New York, (212) 677-6464, www.screamingmimis.com.—Nancy MacDonell
