Fergie

She’s already a spokesperson for Candie’s, and now Fergie is moving further into fashion by taking her first stab at design, with a handbag collection for Kipling. The new line—which is split into three groups, Nice Scout, Naughty Scout, and The Duchess—hits stores in September. Designwise, it’s as schizophrenic as her videos, with camouflage, vibrant plaid, and fuchsia lip patterns all showing up. Before her kickoff party in New York last night, we dished with The Duchess about delving into design and why she’s crazy in love with Karl Lagerfeld.

Why did you decide to team up with Kipling and make bags?

I wanted to make something for the girl that I was growing up. The line is affordable, but still fashionable. I didn’t want to put my name on something that everyone thought was just cute. It was important to me to make sense of it all.

Two parts of the line—Nice Scout and Naughty Scout—use Girl Scouts as inspiration, and we saw you play the sexy scout in your “Fergalicious” video. What’s the obsession?

A lot of us American girls were Girl Scouts, and that’s a huge deal for me. I think being a Girl Scout makes you a strong woman—and it’s kind of like etiquette class for suburbia. To translate it for the line, I thought that if you’re a good scout, you have your bag with all of its compartments and you’re well equipped with trail mix and all of that. But not all Girl Scouts are nice and sweet. So we have Naughty Scout as well.

Have you been inspired by any other designers?

I did a photo shoot with Karl Lagerfeld for V magazine last month and I have a huge crush on him! We got along instantly—he’s crazy, I’m crazy. He’s very classic, but has his knuckle rings and Chrome Hearts on, so he’s definitely rock ‘n’ roll.

Did you get the Chanel hookup?

He gave me a lot of gifts, including this dress, which I love. He was very generous.

Did any of those gifts inspire your Kipling line?

Chanel has their signature style and so does Kipling, with their monkey logo. And you know that if you buy something Chanel, it’s not going to fall apart on you. Of course Kipling is less expensive than Chanel, but it’s still all about quality.
