everyday staples

The sneaker parade (i.e., New York’s streetwear crowd) hit Chelsea last night to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Staple Design, the company helmed by downtown design pioneer Jeff Ng, a.k.a. jeffstaple. Best known for its Lower East Side shop cum gallery Reed Space, the brand also boasts collaborations with LVMH and Nike (and, FYI, a limited-edition anniversary Staple Levi’s jean will be out in the fall). On display last night was an anniversary collection of T-shirts made in conjunction with artists such as Hiroshi Fujiwara and brands such as Colette and Alife, as well as the aluminum Staple X bottle Ng designed for Mountain Dew, the night’s sponsor. And giving Kanye a run for his Best-Dressed Rapper title was Lupe Fiasco, who took the stage around midnight. “Hip-hop used to excite me more when I was 18. Now, at 25, I’m excited by design, T-shirts, and shoes,” he said. For his own line, Trilly & Truly, Fiasco looks to a few choice designers for inspiration: “Junya Wantanabe, Rei Kawakubo—basically, a lot of Japanese design. And, of course, I’m a big fan of Jeff.”—Katie Hintz
