guys and dolls

When you see a grown man carrying a doll around, especially a doll dressed in couture, you have to ask what’s going on. Which is how we came to know London-based Charles Fegen, who, along with his partner, Desmond Lingard, makes the Sybarites, a line of fully articulated, 16-and-a-half-inch-tall (”17 in heels”) resin dolls for grown-ups who love fashion. “The Sybarites were the world’s first really obnoxious rich people,” Fegen says of his creations’ namesake. “They were totally over-the-top, into luxury and partying.” Just as in fashion—an industry both men used to work in—the dolls are designed in collections that vary by season and come in RTW and couture price points (you can expect to pay $700 and up for a Sybarite). “We like to work with a theme, and we’re known for our social commentary—and extravagant taste,” says Fegen (one such theme was Self-Medication, above). In September, the two are bringing their handiwork to New York for the first time, where they’ll be exhibited at Jeffrey New York. “The inspiration for this collection is everything white,” Fegen continues. “We’ve got a white satin men’s tuxedo and an evening dress dripping with razor blades.” Reading between the lines, we sense a seventies, Studio 54 moment coming on.—Nancy MacDonell
