“It’s always interesting to see what the artists come up with,” said curator Aaron Rose at the opening of RE-RUN at the Ford Brady furniture studio in Los Angeles on Friday night. Inspired by the Vintage Nike Running collection, the traveling exhibit (L.A. is the second stop of a multi-city tour) features the work of artists such as Scott Campbell, Tracy Nakayama, and Kime Buzzelli juxtaposed against the line’s retro-inspired sneakers. The streetwear aficionado crowd was transfixed by two things: the Nike giveaways and a hilarious send-up of a circa 1977 television commercial for the cult Waffle sneaker, created by local duo Champ. Rose, for his part, has his retro credentials so down pat that he can afford to be casual about them. When asked about the classic LD 1000s he was sporting, he confessed, “Nike kept trying to offer me rare ones, but I didn’t like the colors. Plus, I’m totally over the rare-shoe thing. It’s just little toys for little bored boys, right?”—Linlee Allen
