This weekend, two supersize music festivals vie for summer concertgoers’ attention. While at least eight of the same bands (Ben Harper, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spoon, Interpol, Regina Spektor, Paolo Nutini, Amy Winehouse, TV on the Radio, Modest Mouse) are performing at both, there are some differences between the mega-concerts. For starters, one—Lollapalooza—is a revived nineties phenom, and the other—the Virgin Festival—is a relative newcomer, now in its second year. Here are some other comparisons.

Lollapalooza

When: August 3 through 5

Where: Grant Park, Chicago

Headliners: Pearl Jam, Daft Punk

Musician we’re excited to see, but afraid admitting so might date us: Patti Smith

Fashion quotient: Fashion quotient: Medium to High: Marc J.’s play for grunge happened too many seasons ago for us to really get behind Eddie Vedder’s flannel stage wear. Patti Smith, on the other hand, is a fashion icon.

Tickets: Still available ($195 for a three-day pass)

Special treatment: $1,700, which includes the price of admission, gets you into the VIP cabanas and the Lolla Lounge, featuring air-conditioned restrooms and, um, “specialty libations.”

The man behind the music: Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell conceived of Lollapalooza as a platform for his band’s final concert 16 years ago. Now, Farrell is the festival’s benevolent godfather, rocking out to the tunes with his young son Izzadore Bravo.

Virgin Festival

When: August 4 and 5

Where: Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore (horse-betting available)

Headliners: The Police, Smashing Pumpkins

Band we’re excited to see, but afraid admitting so might date us: Beastie Boys

Fashion quotient: Sting and the Police are like the little black dress of the music world. They’ve been around forever, but they never seem to go out of style.

Tickets: Still available ($175 for a two-day pass)

Special treatment: For $450, a two-day VIP pass ensures access to the Grandstand Chill Lounge and a commemorative T-shirt

The man behind the music: Sir Richard Branson—the billionaire behind the ubiquitous Virgin brand. Somehow, we’re confident this concert event will have plenty of Virgin paraphernalia for sale.
