tragically hip

The irony was in full force last night at the premiere of Made: I Want to Be a Hipster, held at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. The short film, written by Fashionista.com’s Faran Krentcil, is a spoof of the MTV makeover program in which suburban kids are coached into inhabiting the characters of their dreams, be they rock stars, football players, or beauty queens. Hipster’s Matthew Tritt has humbler aspirations: to fit in with his Lower East Side neighbors and be photographed on the MisShapes’ great white wall. Under the guidance of the trio’s publicist, Thomas Onorato (above), Matt becomes the effete “Matthieu.” He memorizes Morrissey lyrics, DJs at The Annex, and, in homage to Hedi Slimane, eats baby food to fit into skinny jeans. We caught up with the Tarts of Pleasure and Last Night’s Party’s Merlin Bronques to parse hipsterdom. “There’s a major difference between hipsters and scenesters,” explained the Tarts’ Karen Ruttner. “The hipsters want to discuss Proust and appear smarter than you, and the scenesters want to make connections. I’m better off with scenesters.” “Hipsters,” Bronques countered, “are kids from Jersey who try to emulate the style in Details magazine.” So, does he consider hipsters people whom he wouldn’t talk to? Bronques walked away, laughing. —Blythe Sheldon
