color me beautiful

September 20, 2007  12:50 pm

Saunders

Somehow, in the midst of producing and presenting his 35-look Spring 2008 collection earlier this week, Jonathan Saunders found time to collaborate on two limited-edition makeup ranges for U.K. retail giant Boots—and give us the lowdown on his beauty-biz debut. 17 by Jonathan Saunders offers up four lipstick shades and four eye shadows that seamlessly span the nude-bright continuum, all in mod little packages. Sadly, the makeup will be available only in Britain. For those of you who didn’t make it to London this season, place orders with friends who are there, stat—LFW winds down today.

The color palette for your 17 makeup is based on your Fall 2007 collection. Did you have specific looks in mind when you were designing the makeup line?

There were two specific looks that inspired me: the black halter dress with the red, white, and yellow color-blocking down the middle, and the color balance of the dress in look 37, with red moving into muted tones—like a strong, graphic black eyeliner with a highlight of red on the lid.

How involved were you in the creative process?

I was involved from the start with both the color development process and the packaging. I experimented a lot with matte and shiny and working with those two extremes to get interesting textures. Once the colors were right, I went on to develop the packaging.

What inspired the package design?

I draw a lot of inspiration from art—the Bauhaus and Mondrian in particular.

How do you view the use of color in fashion and in makeup—is there a time and place or do you think it’s always appropriate?

Color is so important. It’s what I notice in things, things I pass on the street. It’s such an important part of fashion. It’s what makes you feel special and lets you stand out.

What’s your next move now that fashion week is almost over?

I still have pre-collection production to deal with! But then I’m taking a vacation in March—no idea where yet, but it’s got to be good. And far away!
