Designer update

if you go down to the hood today

September 20, 2007  10:24 am

“It’s preppy but sinister,” declared Dan Macmillan of his Zoltar the Magnificent Spring 2008 menswear line when we visited him at his pop-up presentation space at The Gallery on Charing Cross Road yesterday. The line’s sweaters, which come in shades of candy pink and mint green, are made with Loro Piana cashmere, but feature images of 1920’s cartoon character Rupert Bear… with a hole drilled in his head. And then there’s the presentation itself, a short film about Rupert and his friends, all wearing oversize plaster heads with holes in them and Zoltar clothes, making their (drunken) way to a teddy bear’s picnic. On route, Badger, one of Rupert’s mates, steals some fruit from a vendor, who is played by Rhys Ifans. Ifans’ character chases down, beats up, and then relieves himself on the thief. “Rhys was a real professional about it,” said Macmillan. “He really put his back into it.” We can safely say that we’ve not seen any other presentation quite like this one all week.
