Earnest Sewn opened its second store last night on the Lower East Side, and naturally almost everyone wore denim to the party. “Look around,” said Ally Hilfiger from her perch on a bench on Orchard Street. “These are some major looks. I’m not sure if I should be impressed or intimidated.” One of the store’s attractions is its basement, a former 1920’s speakeasy that Eleanor Ylvisaker showed off to a few curious VIPs, including jewelry designer Evan Yurman and Vanity Fair’s Alexis Bryan. “This store is going to make the area even cooler,” Bryan said while balancing on the steep wooden steps. “But they should reopen this speakeasy. It’ll totally fit into the neighborhood.” If that remark was of interest to the nearby police officers, who had started monitoring the mounting crowd (”It’s the L.E.S. block party” was a battle cry), they didn’t let on.
