lust at first sight

As the audience took their seats for a screening of Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema yesterday evening, there was a fair bit of curiosity as to what they were settling in for. The intrigue—or, in some cases, alarm—heightened when a bow-tied Focus Features exec described the movie as “our first two-and-a-half-hour Chinese porn film.” Fears were allayed when he added that Dior had a hand in the wardrobe and that Cartier had supplied the vintage jewelry, but it wasn’t until dinner at Gemma afterward that guests Kristin Davis, Thakoon Panichgul, Edie Falco, Brett Ratner, and Frederique Van Der Wal agreed that Lee’s latest is more moving than pornographic. Also present was the film’s star, actress Tang Wei, who is fast learning the ropes of international celebrity-hood. “I’m only here for a few days before the L.A. premiere, but I love New York,” she said. “China is much, much older, but they take better care of the buildings here. I wish they did that back home.” One tip she’ll assumedly pick up with practice is how to answer that age-old question—who are you wearing?—without pause. With the help of a translator, she happily reported that her dress was by Jean Yu.
