"I really thought we were going to get a bunch of pictures of guitars," admitted American Photo editor David Schonauer at Saturday’s Visions of Rock opening at 401 Projects. Instead, only one guitar appears in the entire exhibition of 50-odd photographs by 12 rock musicians—in Bryan Adams’ portrait of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Adams also showed black-and-white portraits of Queen Elizabeth II (in her wellies) and Beach Boy Brian Williams. He even brought his camera along to the opening. "I’d like to take a picture of her," he said, pointing to fashion writer Lynn Yaeger. Michael Stipe, meanwhile, was excited to see Melissa Auf der Maur’s work. "I haven’t seen what she’s been doing in years." And Auf der Maur gravitated toward Graham Nash’s vintage photos of classic rock figures. "I like anything that’s older," she said.
