service with a smile

While doing a bit of post-fashion show retail therapy (and maybe a little self-rewarding), Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez stumbled into an old friend at the Opening Ceremony store on Howard Street yesterday afternoon: jewelry designer and burlesque aficionado Liz Goldwyn, who’s been there for the past few days taking private appointments for her accessories line. So instead of shopping for himself, the designer decided to play editor and let Goldwyn walk him through her collection. Her designs include copper nugget earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, and a series of one-of-a-kind oversize gem pendants dipped in molten gold and placed on vintage chains. “Production is not quick or easy,” she said. “But that’s how I want it—each piece is unique.” And how did she like spending fashion week at a downtown shopping spot? “That’s the best part about doing this. I’ve never met my customers or editors like this before. It’s been rewarding for me to hear what they have to stay. And I’ve been giving tips to young people who have just come in to go shopping, too.”—Derek Blasberg
