Subtle, deep, and dark are not adjectives that usually come to mind where Sir Elton John is concerned. But starting tomorrow, when Thanksgiving, a selection of Nan Goldin images from his 3,000-piece photography collection, goes on display at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in the U.K., Sir Elton’s serious side will be exposed. Billed as a microretrospective of Goldin’s career, the exhibit will consist of images documenting Goldin’s life in downtown Manhattan from 1973 to 1999, when she was pioneering and refining the raw, DIY aesthetic that’s made her such a key figure in contemporary photography. Part of the internationally acclaimed BALTIC’s Collectors series, it’s a neat meeting of grit (supplied by Goldin) and glitz (no need to specify where that comes from), courtesy of two headlining cultural figures.
