the surreal thing

"I’m an art groupie," confesses Kiwi designer Kate Sylvester, who’s referenced Jackson Pollock and Klimt in past collections. For her Spring show in Auckland last week, her starting point was a surrealist icon. "After seeing a photo of Meret Oppenheim’s fur-covered cup and saucer recently, it reminded me of a trip I took a few years ago to New York, where I saw the piece live," she explains. "That memory cemented the collection’s surrealist theme." Hand-shaped pockets, gloves doubling as hats, and trompe l’oeil portraits capture the "mad, eccentric glamour" the designer was aiming for. Other influences? Sylvester says she was channeling famous, kooky art groupies of eras past, and those captivating Warhol Factory girls.
