ups and downs

As fashion week’s first (unofficial) day winds down, the references appear to be well-groomed and expensive. At Gilles Montezin’s presentation at Verdura’s tony Fifth Avenue salon, nip-waisted suits, a pouf dress or two, and parrot-embroidered fabric hinted at the designer’s time with Christian Lacroix. Among those perched on the gold chairs lining the walls were Carmen Dell’Orefice; Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman (in Thierry Mugler); Amy Fine Collins; and Stephen Knoll, who did the hair. Meanwhile, way downtown, newcomer Salvador Trinidad debuted with a 17-look collection that channeled uptown chic via Lee Radziwill. The teenage models wearing this ex-Bill Blass designer’s slim-fitting shift dresses and lean skirts might have been thinking “Lee who?” but they looked as fresh as daisies.
