vocabulary lesson: blackberry blockage
September 13, 2007 9:37 am
The sight of a bright young thing pounding her perfectly manicured fingers onto her BlackBerry (or, in some cases, Treo) isn’t necessarily a new one. And neither is the annoyance caused by these distracted ladies when one is behind them on the street, in a bank, checking off a name on a list at a party, or even at the supermarket. The same goes for the boys: How many times have you found yourself trying to scoot around a suit-clad businessman looking up the NASDAQ on his handheld? Or a cardigan-wearing fashion boy texting as he leaves the tents? This latter instance—i.e., when the untimely use of a mobile phone coincides with the mass exodus of a fashion show—has prompted a whole new noun: BlackBerry Blockage, the profoundly frustrating social dance of trying to get around distracted professionals. Surely it can’t be that hard to type and walk at the same time, people! Or at the least make room for those of us who still look up the weather, check stock quotes, and download images from our desks.
