a whiter shade of pale

This is one of those if-you-know-the-rules-you-can-break-them situations: Nicole Kidman has a very fair complexion, yet she consistently chooses pale frocks (see the 2002 and 2004 Oscars, both Chanel). She went for an off-white embroidered sheath from Balenciaga for the New York Film Festival premiere of her latest movie, “Margot at the Wedding”—and once again defied the odds and looked great.
