charity case

October 29, 2007  12:12 pm

Natalieportman

Natalie Portman is racking up the do-gooder points these days. “Saving a Species: Gorillas on the Brink,” the documentary she made in collaboration with Jack Hanna to raise awareness about Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas, debuted on Animal Planet on Friday, and beginning tomorrow, “Big Change: Songs for FINCA,” her charity CD benefiting the organization that helps alleviate poverty in developing countries, will be available for purchase through iTunes. For a mere $7.99, you’ll get to enjoy 16 songs curated by the “Hotel Chevalier” star (who apparently has good taste in both scripts AND music). Nothing’s offocial yet, but the rumored playlist includes “Paddy’s Gone” by Antony and the Johnsons, “There’s Always Something Happening” by Devendra Banhart, and a Bjorn Yttling remix of Portman-favorite the Shins’ “Australia” (she arguably catapulted the Portland foursome to success with her endorsement—they’ll “change your life”—in 2004’s “Garden State”). Plus, you can revel in that warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing that you too have given back, albeit in the guise of a burgeoning neo-folk music obsession. Here are a few other purveyors of fine, for-charity merchandise that will make rationalizing your dwindling PayPal account that much easier.

Whatever It Takes

An Eastpak limited-edition backpack designed by the Hives; original Vans designed by Ozzy Osbourne; ceramic plates with illustrations by Ewan McGregor and David Bowie. These are just some of the goods you can expect to find on this frequently updated Web site dedicated to selling ethically produced artwork from recognized leaders in a myriad of fields (royalty, film, music, Nobel Peace Prize laureates, sports, literature—you get the idea) to raise funds for charitable causes chosen by each contributing artist.

Frederick’s of Hollywood Celebrity Corset Auction

www.clothesoffourback.org

Put on in conjunction with Clothes Off Our Back, an organization that hosts charity auctions of celebrity togs to benefit children’s charities, Frederick’s has commissioned a bevy of celebrities to design corsets for a cause. Going on now until November 5, you can bid on creations from the likes of Ashley Olsen, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Fergie, whose black-and-white bow number is already at $350.

7th on Sale

In its second year online, the CFDA and Vogue’s ultimate sample sale is back beginning November 15 and running through December 6. You can bid online for celebrity-worn gowns, jewelry, home goods, and all kinds of other great stuff you might score at a normal sample sale, except 100 percent of the proceeds here go to raising money for people living with HIV and AIDS.
