charity case

Natalie Portman is racking up the do-gooder points these days. “Saving a Species: Gorillas on the Brink,” the documentary she made in collaboration with Jack Hanna to raise awareness about Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas, debuted on Animal Planet on Friday, and beginning tomorrow, “Big Change: Songs for FINCA,” her charity CD benefiting the organization that helps alleviate poverty in developing countries, will be available for purchase through iTunes. For a mere $7.99, you’ll get to enjoy 16 songs curated by the “Hotel Chevalier” star (who apparently has good taste in both scripts AND music). Nothing’s offocial yet, but the rumored playlist includes “Paddy’s Gone” by Antony and the Johnsons, “There’s Always Something Happening” by Devendra Banhart, and a Bjorn Yttling remix of Portman-favorite the Shins’ “Australia” (she arguably catapulted the Portland foursome to success with her endorsement—they’ll “change your life”—in 2004’s “Garden State”). Plus, you can revel in that warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing that you too have given back, albeit in the guise of a burgeoning neo-folk music obsession. Here are a few other purveyors of fine, for-charity merchandise that will make rationalizing your dwindling PayPal account that much easier.
