cold comfort

Absinthe. Brandy. Amaretto. When we read the labels of the homeopathic-inspired shower gels and shaving creams at the new Soho flagship of Greek beauty label Korres, we felt like we’d wandered into a liquor store. Then we spied a cough syrup on the shelves. “That’s our version of rakomelo, a honey and raki drink my husband’s [founder George Korres] grandfather used to make for winter nights in Naxos,” said Lena Korres of the concoction. While Korres’ pappou used raki, which can be up to 70 percent alcohol, his pharmacist grandson took raki’s ingredients—fennel, thyme, and anise seed—and added honey to make a less intoxicating brew, the Honey Base Syrup. “The real thing keeps you warm by basically burning your throat,” Korres continued. “The syrup is milder but still does the job.” The Korres store opens next Thursday—perfectly timed for the coming cold (and cough) season. Korres, 110 Wooster Street, New York City, (212) 219-0683.
