Who’s the bearded man in the turquoise dress sharing the November cover of Paris Vogue with Carolyn Murphy? It’s none other than New York fashion swan Andre J., who had previously appeared in an Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin spread in V magazine but has now raised his profile considerably with the Bruce Weber shot. A nightlife impresario at Lotus and Hiro, Andre J. can usually be spotted in downtown Manhattan, dressed to the nines in any number of envelope-pushing, gender-bending looks, which he always accessorizes with a beard. “The whole Paris Vogue thing came about because of Joe McKenna,” he said, explaining that the stylist insisted that he connect with Weber after the two ran into each other on the street. A couple of phone calls later, Andre J. was en route to Montauk to meet up with Weber and Carine Roitfeld. The cover shot came as a surprise, he says, but there was much to be learned from the experience. “You don’t have to be like anyone else. Be yourself and just keep on keeping on.”
