fire alarm

October 24, 2007  5:26 pm

Apart from the occasional green conversation (”when will Hummer come out with a hybrid?” is one question we’ve actually heard discussed), the environment isn’t always the foremost topic of conversation among the ladies who lunch. But not surprisingly, at yesterday’s Nina Ricci luncheon at Kelly Wearstler’s house in Los Angeles, talk didn’t just revolve around gossip, plastic surgery, and Olivier Theyskens’ designs. The brushfires making their way down from Malibu were the topic of the day. One socialite had packed her Mercedes with all her valuables (including love letters her grandparents had written each other during the war and her jewelry) before being evacuated and driving down for the runway presentation, luncheon, and trunk show—and had then left everything in the car when she headed inside. Another well-heeled lady lamenting the fires was former New Yorker Minnie Mortimer Gaghan, who, along with her husband of less than a year, “Syriana” writer and director Stephen Gaghan, had to leave their beachfront house. Like many Californians, though, she sounded defiant. “Don’t get me wrong,” she said. “I love it here.”
