forward march

The 151 galleries showing work by more than 1,000 artists from 28 countries to 68,000 visitors were only part of the spectacle that made the Frieze Art Fair the white-hot highlight of cool Britannia’s autumn social calendar. The roster of art, fashion, film, and rock stars spotted browsing the booths adds an extra level of buzz, with this year’s potential celebrity collectors including the guys from Travis, former art student Jarvis Cocker, Mike Skinner (a.k.a. the Streets), Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan, Dennis Hopper, Claudia Schiffer, Charles Saatchi, Tom Ford, Elle Macpherson, Philip Treacy, and David LaChapelle. We also spotted Alexander McQueen intently eyeing a series of nostalgic pornographic drawings by Gerald Davis at the Salon 94 booth. McQueen’s presence particularly resonated with us, since we’d worn an asymmetrical McQueen skirt to the press preview and on the way there were stopped every few minutes by concerned old ladies whispering to us that our hem wasn’t straight. But once at the Frieze, we spotted three other women in the identical garment. For once, this wasn’t an affront but an affirmation that forward-thinking art and forward-thinking fashion go hand in hand.
