fun and games

Paris trend alert: The most serious city on the international fashion circuit seems to be endorsing…fun. No sooner had Junya Watanabe sent her band of brightly clad models down the runway to the sound of classic Motown today than Lovisa Burfitt was waxing lyrical about bringing, yes, “fun” back into her collection. Pointing to one of her Japanese schoolgirl-inspired designs (think checked minidresses with cheeky bustles), which she showed on neon-colored mannequins at the Petite Palais, she said, “My last collection was so black and sober, I really wanted this one to make people go, ‘Yeah!’ ” But playful though Burfitt’s presentation was, she included only a few of the quirky illustrated T-shirts that have made her a favorite with the Paris Vogue girls. “I am doing a lot of commissions for them now,? she said. “In fact, Carine Roitfeld ordered one with a picture of herself on the front and wore it to the Cannes Film Festival opening.” If that’s not the first evidence of humor trickling back into fashion, we don’t know what is.
