Designer update

imitation of life

Imitation1

If you’re looking for reworked vintage or other vestiges of Tara Subkoff and Matt Damhave’s reign, you won’t find them in Imitation, the new spin-off line of Imitation of Christ. The new label’s pared-down modernity owes more to Helmut Lang than to brand ambassador Subkoff, who has no involvement with its design or production. Instead, designer Kasia Bilinski, an Aussie transplant who was previously at Threeasfour and Naum, works in references to her own experiences. “I have a fine-arts background, and I try to incorporate that into the clothes in subtle ways,” she said of the Spring collection, which features spare silhouettes, muted colors like steel and rust, and plenty of layering options. Imitation has one major fan already: Charlize Theron, who just ordered a strappy low-necked dress.
