Though the Rachel Zoes of the world have, for better or worse, made being a stylist somewhat more understandable than it was, it’s still not easy explaining to people what you do for a living when that’s what goes on your income tax return. “It’s quite unknown and invisible—photographers and models tend to get the limelight, but styling is undiscovered territory,” said Sarah Mower at last night’s launch party for the book she wrote, “Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion,” at Skylight Studios in New York. Andrea Lieberman, who’s one of the 16 stylists Mower profiled, agreed. “People think you just shop,” she said. “Or they’re like, ‘So you’re a hair stylist?’ ” Even family members get confused on the latter point. “For the longest time everyone, including my parents, thought I was a hair stylist,” said Joe Zee of Elle, another of the fashion arbiters included in the book. But we didn’t truly appreciate how often the fashion/hair misunderstanding comes up until we got into a cab for the ride home and the driver asked us what the party was for. When we explained, he said, “Hair stylists?”
