“Our name describes our manifesto,” says Susan Dimasi of Material By-Product, the Melbourne-based label she and partner Chantal McDonald design. “The thing that comes out the other end is the by-product of inventing new techniques and processes. We don’t stop at designing product, we’re engendering culture—and fashion is an important participator in culture.” The duo’s philosophy is evident in their Spring ‘08 collection, which they previewed for us during a visit to New York this week. Called Soft Hard Hard Harder, it uses a proprietary tattoo print on greige georgette (a signature fabric) and features a new silhouette they call “template,” which has no buttons or zips. They’re the kind of details Björk—who commissioned several beaded pieces (above), tattered leather gaiters, and shoes for her fall tour—appreciates. And how do they feel about the inevitable Boudicca comparisons? Says Dimasi, “I feel good about being compared to Boudicca; they’re another studio that attempts to change convention and holds a respect for craft.”
