Eco fashion designer Linda Loudermilk’s choice of a solar-powered gas station as the venue for her Spring ‘08 fashion show (BP’s monolithic steel Helios House at the corner of Robertson and Olympic in L.A.) reflects both her environmental outlook and her Big Plans. The long-delayed opening of her “Luxury Eco” lifestyle boutique on Melrose Avenue seems on track for early 2008, and her show Wednesday night let us know that she hasn’t just been waiting around for that to happen. The impressive 56-look collection, Winds of Change, incorporated true organic elements: Silk was dyed with mud and cut into a body-hugging jacket with horizontal pintucks down the back, and seaweed and wood-pulp fabrics were pushed to textural extremes. Model Kirsty Hume looked regal in the Albatross gown, worn with a feather-and-telephone-cord boa. Standing with her husband, Donovan Leitch, after the show, Hume said that this was her only fashion week runway appearance. “It’s a cause,” she added, raising her fist like a good eco-activist.
