notes from the underground

Much as New York’s fashion intelligentsia likes to talk about “the Belgians,” Antwerp- and Brussels-based designers have never been that easy to find in the city. Stocking up on A.F. Vandevorst and the like meant waiting for Paris fashion week and hoping you had time to shop between shows. No more. Now, thanks to Paris-born sisters Linda and Sarah Belkebir, the best of Belgian design is available on the Lower East Side. The siblings recently opened Le Sous Sol (French for “the basement,” which is further proof that pretty much everything sounds more glamorous en français), a below-street-level boutique that stocks both well-known names and up-and-comers such as Jessie Lecomte, who works wool into dramatic but wearable pieces like a pleated cape-dress, and Eric Beaudoin, who fashions one-of-a-kind bags from vintage leather jackets. “Sometimes we need to explain the pieces a bit,” says Linda. “But once customers realize the quality and the uniqueness of the clothes, they immediately get it.” Le Sous Sol, 137 Rivington Street, New York, (212) 477-7723, www.lesoussol.com.
