prince of the city

October 12, 2007  3:40 pm

Richard Prince’s work has been attracting its fair share of attention at the Frieze Art Fair (Stephanie Seymour told us she has to drag herself away from his photos). But those of us with fashion on the brain were not only interested in the prints on display at Gagosian and Barbara Gladstone—we were also keen to see this month’s W, for which the artist created a series of headshots of famous actresses along with autographs and notes that he made up and signed as if the women themselves had written to him. In fact, more than one Frieze-r swung by the Gladstone New York booth, which had a preview copy, to ask if they could have a sneak peek, especially since W takes a wee bit longer to make it to this side of the pond. While the fashion and art communities haven’t officially weighed in, word has reached us that the actresses weren’t particularly pleased with Prince’s work. In fact, when she got wind of what Prince had done, one of them sent a three-word e-mail to a W staffer. If we give you the first two words, we’re sure you’ll be able to supply the third: “What the –?”
