ritz refurb

Fans of gilded candelabras, chintz-covered sofas, and marble fireplaces received a shock Tuesday: Although no official announcement has been made, the rumors that Paris’ Ritz hotel will be closing for renovations, which have been circulating for several seasons, have come to a head. Apparently the Kaiser himself, Karl Lagerfeld (whose muse Amanda Harlech keeps an apartment in the luxe Place Vendôme property), was overheard asking his staff where they will be staying when the place shuts its doors for a reputed two years. A chat with the concierge at the hotel didn’t prove too helpful: “We’ve been hearing these rumors for the past five years,” one of the hotel clerks said. “We’ll probably be the last ones to know.” Pressed a little further, she added, “I can tell you that we’ve heard them more lately, and from people who would know.” We also learned that the refurb will take place in two stages, so rooms will be available throughout the renovation period. Guests will, however, have to put up with the inconvenience of construction. Details are scarce, but it might be a good idea for the swanky editors, celebrities, and publicists who stay here during the collections to start thinking of other options. And booking early—without the Ritz’s 106 rooms, 56 suites, and 11 prestige suites, not to mention its bars and restaurants, there will no doubt be an accommodations scurry for the Fall 2008 collections.
