taking risks at the ritz

The bar at the back of the Ritz has seen some crazy stuff in its more than century-long history. From gentlemen looking for a fun-filled night in Belle Époque Paris to Kate Moss entertaining more than one fling in its chintz-filled environs in the last half decade, the Bar Hemingway (named for Ernest, of course, who had some wild times of his own here) has just the sort of smoky, dark decadence that international movers and shakers are looking for. It takes a lot to make heads twirl here, but last night, Annabel Neilson, one of the ultimate London ladies about town and BFF to La Moss and Daphne Guinness, did just that. The leggy Neilson, who’s a close mate of Alexander McQueen’s, swanned into the bar wearing little more than some black lace and a few carefully placed sequins and bits of embroidery—a one-of-a-kind confection that was a gift from the designer. “It’s just as comfortable as it looks,” she cooed. “In fact, it’s almost like I’m wearing nothing at all.” Her Ritz posse included Guinness, Jefferson Hack, Anouck Lepère, designer Sue Stemp, and Hilary Rhoda, all of whom were abuzz about how ballsy it was to go out in a look like that. “The biggest problem with this dress,” Neilson said just before she and Guinness headed off to McQueen’s after-party, “is that everyone—even boys—want to try it on. But it was made just for me.”
