art attack

“It’s my opening tonight and I don’t want to spend it talking to you, so hurry up,” snapped Tracey Emin when we asked her for a quick comment on her impressions of Los Angeles on Friday night. The scene was the Gagosian Gallery, which is hosting the British artist’s first solo exhibit in the city. “Look, I’ve been lying by the pool all day. I’m staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel, which is one of the nicer hotels I’ve ever stayed at. I love swimming and they’ve got a great pool. There. Are you happy?” Emin’s artistic temperament seems to work wonders for her sales, however: Most pieces in the show sold before the gallery opened its doors. As guests Orlando Bloom, Samantha Mathis, Julie Delpy, and Tara Subkoff headed off for a post-opening dinner in honor of the artist at Dominick’s, Subkoff summed up her appeal. “She really is one of the greatest feminist forces in the art world today.”
