Themotherlodembig

Though Cathie Pilkington describes her tableaux as taxidermy, the term is misleading; none of her stuffed or plastic figures were ever actually alive. Instead of dead animals, the installations Pilkington will present in the childhood-themed “White Elephant,” her first solo London show at Marlborough Fine Art, will consist of customized vintage dolls and modeled polychrome figures. Infused with life by the imaginings of their original owners, they were later left to rot at car-boot sales, flea markets, and other after-life dumping grounds for old toys until the 39-year-old Manchester-born artist gave them a fresh existence in her sculptures. With pieces like “The Motherload,” in which a massive baby reclines on a bed of china figurines like Manet’s Olympia, Pilkington turns the gallery into a heavenly resting place for discarded playthings—and makes exciting new art out of broken old trash. “White Elephant,” Marlborough Fine Art, November 6 through December 7.
