inside out

“When you look good on the outside, you feel good on the inside,” said Rachel Zoe in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon. The occasion was the book signing for Zoe’s new how-to, “Style A to Zoe: The Art of Fashion, Beauty, & Everything Glamour,” at the Kitson boutique. Early Christmas shoppers seemed to agree with the celebrity stylist’s version of what looks good on the outside—the stacks of copies surrounding her diminished steadily. In between sips of Diet Snapple, Zoe fielded questions from her fans. “I love your style!” gushed one devotee, who purchased three copies (one for each of her daughters, she explained). “Can I ask? Do you curl your eyelashes?” “No. I get mine individually done,” confessed Zoe. Moments later, she cringed as another fan pointed out a holiday snapshot circa the big-hair years of the late eighties from Zoe’s private collection. “Oh, no!” she howled. “I begged the publisher not to put that in!” Even the experts don’t always look good on the outside, it seems.
