Cruelvscool

Attention, aspiring designers: The road to fashion glory may be paved with human hair. That’s according to Marc Bouwer, one of the judges of the Cool vs. Cruel design competition, sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States, which honored this year’s winners on Thursday night. "That’s the great thing about students," said Bouwer. "They’re spontaneous enough that when they think about alternatives to fur, they think, you know, why not use hair?" He gestured at the hair-plaited jacket in question, by runner-up Nathan Carter. This year’s winner, Jolie Benner, was flown in from Portland for the jam-packed party, which saw designers such as Frank Tell, Erin Fetherston, and "Project Runway" winner Jay McCarroll taking in the finalists’ designs (including Benner’s yellow Tyvek sheath) and performances by DJ Paul Sevigny and the band Papercranes. As she listened to the music, reveler Kate Elson said, "This is a better way of getting to people than by preaching at them."
