state of grace

It was a quarter-life crisis that prompted womenswear designer Grace Sun to ditch her lucrative job as a creative director of a multimillion-dollar Internet company to pursue a career in fashion. While taking courses at Parsons the New School for Design, Sun interned for Rachel Roy and 3.1 Phillip Lim before launching her own eponymous line of urban-chic dresses and separates. The best part? Nothing in Sun’s past three collections is priced above $400. Inspired by the idea of “tropics in the city,” her upcoming spring line—which will be carried by Henri Bendel, Ron Herman, and Neiman Marcus, among others—includes a bevy of silk dresses in cheery colors as well as oversize cardigans and cotton shirtdresses in closet-staple neutrals. “I try to achieve a balance between what’s functional and what’s beautiful,” says Sun, whose pieces have already been spotted on Charlize Theron and Mandy Moore. “The clothes are very simple and modern, but with a bit of a twist.”
