that warm, fuzzy feeling

Since it’s better to give than receive, it’s perfectly all right (indeed, expected) to shop ’til you drop during the holiday season. But spending money doesn’t need to be purely material: Several retailers are making it easy for shoppers to make donations to worthy causes while they’re checking off their lists. From December 6 through 12, Banana Republic’s Share the Warmth program will reward your donation of a gently used sweater (to benefit Goodwill Industries) with 30 percent off a new sweater (except cashmere). And Target.com has partnered with St. Jude Children’s Hospital to create wish lists for the young patients—just browse the lists, add an item (or two) to the rest of your purchases, and Target will deliver them to the hospital in time for Christmas. And of course, you’ve still got a few more days to shop Seventh on Sale on eBay, which supports HIV/AIDS programs. Not content to put your philanthropic leanings inside the wrapping paper? Go to Malarianomore.org for greeting cards and e-cards—the purchase price of every card and e-card buys an insecticide-treated bed net for an African family, and educates them on how to use it to prevent malaria, a disease that kills over a million people each year. Giving and gifting, with a socially conscious bent. Now that’s the holiday spirit.
