watching the detectives

Although they’re the speediest of canines, greyhounds wouldn’t exactly make good police dogs; they’re too model-like and fashion-y to imagine as being very effective at fighting crime. The same is true for the lithe, greyhound-sleek girls in the paintings Jansson Stegner’s produced for his show at New York’s Bellwether Gallery. They’re wearing police uniforms, but they’re so languidly posed that you can’t imagine them out on the street or behind the wheel of a squad car. More like sages than security guards, Stegner’s figures have the sinewy sex appeal of El Grecos and Schieles, or more contemporary masters of long-legged female beauty, like Hilary Harkness. But they emanate a bitter-sweet glow that recalls the Pre-Raphelites or Corinne Day’s early shots of Kate Moss lounging around a cluttered apartment. If only the police force could afford to flop around so poetically. Jansson Stegner, November 15 through December 22, Bellwether Gallery, 134 Tenth Avenue, NYC.
