Who says adults can’t enjoy dolls? Today, global do-gooder UNICEF is unveiling its Designdolls initiative at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. The program invited 70 Italian artists and designers to personalize a Plexiglas “doll,” all of which will be auctioned off on December 18 in conjunction with Sotheby’s. The proceeds will go to UNICEF’s efforts to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS in children all over the world. Among the Designdoll creators is the Italian label Moschino, whose designers did their Designdoll with signature kitsch, transforming the figurine into a “Love Clock,” whose time-telling heart represents the hope that the protection of children will be a constant thought. If you miss out on scoring a Designdoll, you can still support UNICEF in a fashionable way: This holiday season, Gucci is introducing an exclusive version of the house’s beloved Indy bag, specially designed by Frida Giannini with red leather handles and tassels and a special gold plaque on the interior. A quarter of the year-round sales of the Gucci for UNICEF Indy (and 25 percent of the sales of their Holiday Campaign to Benefit UNICEF) will go directly to the charity’s children’s programs in Malawi and Mozambique. It’s certainly chicer than carrying around a Trick or Treat for UNICEF box.
