anna’s cup of tea

Any designer worth his or her salt has a knack for figuring out what people want well before they know they want it. So it would seem that there’s no better way to sneak a read off a designer’s exquisitely fine-tuned radar for what’s next than by asking what he (or she) is hoping to find under the tree this holiday season. In the case of Mary Ping, that surmise may prove true; clues to next season seem to be lurking in her wish list of “anything from the Azzedine Alaïa vintage leopard-print collection, Assouline’s red-leather notebook, and Silvano Lattanzi handmade leather wingtips.” On the other hand, Phillip Lim’s Christmas-morning fantasy drops no hints at all about his forthcoming show, other than the fact that he’s working like mad to get ready for it. “What I’d really like,” Lim says, “is time to freeze for about two weeks so that I can go on a proper vacation before the February shows. Oh, and also, peace and love and happiness for all!” Undoubtedly, Anna Sui would second both of Lim’s requests, but she’s making it easier on holiday-frazzled shoppers. “There is a particular kind of ceramic dinner set that I want to collect,” she explains, with pleasing specificity. “I’m in love with the whole set. The company is called Arabia Finland and they have this pattern, Paratiisi, in black and white that I adore.” Though it might be reading too much into Sui’s lust for discontinued china to assume that her Fall show will feature black-and-white fruit prints à la Paratiisi, Sui gifters reading this should take note: There are teacups on eBay.
