Having Madonna endorse your eponymous clothing line is a coup for any burgeoning designer, but Olivier Theyskens claims he was nonplussed by the feat. “I was okay about it, I wasn’t hysterical or anything,” the sanguine Nina Ricci creative director told audience members at Manhattan’s Florence Gould Hall Friday evening. “More than satisfaction, you think, ‘This is something good—I’m right to go there.’ You pay attention to anything that makes you believe you’re not making a big mistake.” Pamela Golbin, a curator
at Paris’ Musée de la Mode et du Textile, who moderated the French Institute-sponsored talk, then queried Theyskens on his student days. Was dropping out of Brussels’ La Cambre Art Institute a misstep, or no big deal? “The only disaster was maybe those few days that I really went to school,” Theyskens laughed.
