In case you’ve been in a hermetically sealed building for the past year and haven’t been out to smell the fresh air, eco-chic has arrived. This past weekend in Kuala Lumpur, designers on the front lines of the movement were recognized at the first ecoStyle Award, oganized by NYC Inc. and IMG Fashion with support from Tourism Malaysia and the New York-based Earth Pledge. The nominees were Stella McCartney, Jurlique beauty products, Knoll furniture, Terra Plana footwear, Q Collections furniture, and the winner of the award, Dr. Ken Yeang, a progressive architect of the green movement who invented the bioclimatic skyscraper. Several designers, including Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta, Peter Som, Han Feng, Project Alabama, and the new team at Halston, staged a runway show of looks all rendered in sustainable materials. Earth Pledge’s director, Leslie Hoffman, said this important event was organized to show that “beauty, style, and sustainability can co-exist.”
