like water for chaka

Jessica Stam has trod a lot of runways, but until last night, she’d most likely never been called upon to do so while carrying a 40-pound jug of water in each hand. You’ve got to like a gala that puts you to work: At the Charity: Water benefit in Manhattan yesterday evening, water-carrying was a must-do; every attendee who slipped off his or her dressy shoes and took a turn on the catwalk with jugs in hand earned a cool $240 from corporate sponsors, with the money going to dig wells in Africa. But that was just the warm-up show. Co-hosted by Stam and Adrian Grenier, the event featured two jaw-dropping musical sets, the first by Chan Marshall and the second by a top-secret act—wait for it—Chaka Khan. And so, just when it seemed like the right question to ask Charity: Water founder Scott Harrison would be one about jugs, or wells, or Africa, it turned out that the only question to ask was: How did you get Chaka Khan to sing? “Oh, you know,” Harrison replied, with a Cheshire cat grin. “When you spend ten years working at nightclubs, eventually, you meet someone who knows Chaka. And then you just ask.”
